A friend of mine recently told me a wonderful old zen story that goes something like this:
One day while walking across a field a man came across a vicious tiger. He ran, and the tiger chased him … all the way to the edge of a cliff. The man caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself down over the edge. While the tiger paced and sniffed at him from above, the man saw that at the bottom of the cliff, another tiger was waiting to eat him! Hanging onto the vine was the only thing saving the man.
When the man looked up again, he saw there were two mice gnawing at the vine, starting to chew their way through it. Then he saw a wild strawberry growing near him. Hanging onto the vine with one hand, the man picked the strawberry with the other. It was the most delicious thing he’d ever tasted!
I keep thinking about that story, and what a perfect reminder it is for us to find things to savor in the midst of our sometimes crazy lives. Luckily most of our situations aren’t life or death, but they can still get very stressful and feel like we’re between a rock and a hard place!
After hearing this story, I started a new motto for myself, to “Find the strawberries!” It is similar to Big Fish Principle #6, which says “Trust that perfection is all around you, right now.” If we go through life finding the strawberries, we will find the things to be grateful for and to savor… and the more strawberries we find, the more it seems there are!
So my challenge to you for this last quarter of 2012 is to find the strawberries every day, and to notice how delicious they are! I’d love to hear about it!
